So you want to be a veterinarian?
Young people often tell me that they are planning on becoming a veterinarian, and have many questions about the training necessary to become a veterinarian. This section of my website is dedicated to answering your questions about becoming a veterinarian.
Often I am asked if you (or your child) can "job shadow" me for a school requirement. Generally speaking, I require children to be at least 12 years old to job shadow with me. I work on horses, and due to the inherent dangers associated with my job, I require that the kids be older and more responsible.
What everyone needs to know is that ALL prospective veterinarians have had to work or volunteer with practicing veterinarians prior to getting into veterinary school, so you should never be afraid to ask your veterinarian to "shadow" them. We all had to do it at some point because it is a requirement for admission to veterinary school.

The links below will answer most of your questions. I would recommend that everyone visit MSU during Vet-a-Visit. It’s an inside look at one of the top veterinary schools in the country.
